Asteron, the trans-Tasman superannuation and life insurance provider, has pro-actively reduced energy consumption by switching off its building sign every Wednesday - all night - since March 2007.
Asteron is part of the wealth management arm of the Suncorp Group.
For Earth Hour - 8pm to 9pm Saturday 29 March - Asteron will turn off the lights on its floors and the building sign from 7pm on Friday 28 March, and keep them off until 7pm on Monday 31 March.
Asteron holds building signage rights and occupies levels five to 10 at 321 Kent Street in Sydney’s CBD.
Asteron’s participation in Earth Hour is just one initiative aimed to reduce energy consumption to encourage greater awareness of climate change issues among its employees and customers.
Suncorp Wealth Management Group Executive Dennis Fox said, “We hope, by our participation in Earth Hour and our weekly commitment to reducing energy through switching off our building sign, that Asteron demonstrates that businesses can take a leadership role on reducing energy consumption.
“Asteron is committed to minimising its impact on the environment,” Mr Fox said, “when we undertook the fit-out of our head office in 2006, we adopted low-energy lighting, on motion sensors, that automatically switch off at 7pm.”
In addition, the Asteron building sign uses maintenance-free energy efficient neon globes that use less energy than the alternative toxic fluoro bulbs used in many other building signs.
The Asteron sign also runs off transformers, which use the least amount of power possible for a sign that is seen from Pyrmont and Darling Harbour.
