Choosing a financial adviser

Like any professional you deal with, it pays to find a financial adviser you trust and feel comfortable with.

Ask friends and family, your employer, or your local bank branch - they may be able to recommend someone they trust. We can also help you find an accredited adviser in your area.

The most important thing to check is that you’re dealing with an adviser who’s suitably qualified to be giving you the advice you’re after.

To help you make an educated decision about a financial adviser’s credentials, they are required to provide you with a Financial Services Guide (FSG) at your first meeting. It gives you information about the advice process and outlines their experience and credentials including:

  • whether the financial planner is licensed
  • who they work for
  • how they will charge you
  • the range of services they offer
  • their associations with investment companies
  • what to do if you have a complaint.

Is your adviser a member of the FPA or AFA?

You should make sure your adviser is a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) or the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA).

These are two key industry bodies in Australia. Between them they have thousands of members, and promote quality financial advice for consumers and high standards of ethical and professional behaviour among their members.
