Step 7 of 9

Coping with negative returns

If your super is invested in growth assets, you may have experienced negative returns last year.

While it’s never nice to see poor performance, it’s important to put these results into perspective – particularly when you’re talking about long-term investments like super.

Late 2007 ended an extremely successful run from the Australian sharemarket of five consecutive years of double-digit growth.

It’s a reminder that growth assets like shares and property will always fluctuate. And there will always be the potential for negative returns – just as there’s the potential for double-digit growth.

What’s important for investors is to take the good with the bad. History shows that markets will generally recover, and patient investors can be well placed to take advantage of the recovery.
